Electronic Shelf Labels heading for Germany

Scandinavian company Delfi Technologies has plans for Electronic Shelf Labels throughout Germany.

Delfi, who have offices throughout Scandinavia and a track record of delivering high tech into the retail supermarket sector, have recently purchased a controlling share in ZBD Germany, from the UK firm,  Displaydata.

Delfi have been delivering Displaydata Electronic Shelf Labels (ELS) into stores throughout Scandinavia and the expectation is that they will now hit the ground running in Germany.  

Delfi combines their software with hardware from Displaydata to provide a shop-wide price-label solution.  The e-paper displays are networked such that an individual price label, or all of the store’s labels can be updated instantly.

They also claim that “the platform ensures a seamless integration with existing POS”  (Point Of Sales machines).

e-paper is so named due to the electronic display resembling the characteristics of paper; hence electronic paper, or e-paper.  Because the display reflects incident light, rather than emitting light like in a conventional lcd or led display, the display looks very much like ink on paper.

There are various competing technological methods for creating e-paper.  The e-paper that Displaydata produces is a static type which holds its image even when the electrical supply is disconnected.  It works by integrating a sub-micron textured layer that allows the liquid crystals to retain their position after the current is removed.  It can display graphical data as well as text, and some of the displays like the new “Chroma” range can display multiple colours.

Changing out traditional paper labels across a large shop, for each item price-change,  is a considerable ongoing task.  By implementing a networked e-paper method, rapid changes can be made as well as presenting a range of information to the customer like QR-codes, special promotions, graphics, etc.

It certainly seems that we will be seeing more of this technology in the years ahead.
